Steve Forbes

“The discipline, the global view, long-term success, and then the seeming incongruity of being a money man, and a man keenly interested in the things unseen.”

IT WAS ONCE remarked by Sir John’s long-time assistant Mary Walker—following the November 1978 Forbes cover titled, “Investment Wizard John Templeton: Where the Smart Money Is Going”—that “the phones started ringing, and have not stopped since.” With that said, the Forbes magazine shined an early spotlight on Sir John, just as he and his partner who handled distribution, John Galbraith, were beginning to see some traction in fund sales based on the superb track record of the Templeton Growth Fund. The article began by describing the volatility that was quite rampant across the 1970s and its ability to unnerve most investors, and then went on to illustrate an investor who withstood the pressure. From the November 1978 issue:

How do you keep your head in a situation like this? What Forbes did was make an appointment to see John Templeton down in Lyford Cay in the Bahamas. John Marks Templeton is one of those rare birds who can keep his head when the market is doing scary things. He’s seen it all or nearly all in his 40 years in the investing game. With his cool head and hand, he has produced a spectacular record. Forbes, which has interviewed them all, considers John Templeton to be one of the handful of true investment greats in a field crowded with mediocrity and bloated reputations.
